Ernest Henry Wilson, 1876 - 1930 was a plant hunter, gardener and botanist. He left school early to work in a local nursery. He became an apprentice gardener at Birmingham Botanical Gardens, studying in the evenings. He received the Queens Prize for botany. He also worked at Kew. James Veitch & sons employed him as a plant hunter.
During an exhibition to China in 1910 he discovered Regal Lilies. His leg was crushed and broken during an avalanche. Rather than abandon his newly discovered Lilies, he used a camera tripod to help set his leg and carried on. He walked with a 'Lily Limp' as he called it.
Sarah was drawn to paint this plant because of the bright tangerine colour and raindrops.
